when you have an overcommitted flag waver

Linking up with other brave writers at Five Minute Friday. This week's prompt is "try". Fitting for those of us who dare to try to write for five minutes straight with no fancy edits. Come on over to Kate Motaung's blog to find out more!

I think I’ve got this little person inside of me. Every time I go to try something new, she gets out her little red flag and starts waving it with all of her might.

I’m not sure where she came from, or why she started doing this, but she’s done it since I was a little girl.

The Flag Waver.

I think she’s trying to warn me off of anything that might be dangerous or scary.

But, she’s over committed to this.

She’s a little too enthusiastic because she gets her flag out over the most seemingly mundane things.

Like trying watercolor painting

Playing with acrylic paints

Trying a new craft, like knitting.

She’s also full of what if’s.

I mean, full!!

What if you make a mistake?

What if you fail?

What if your work isn’t
as good as so and so’s?

You’ll be a failure!!

This flag waver isn’t my friend.

She keeps me from even thinking about trying new things.  I have managed to silence her lately, because in spite of her flag waving, I have tried mixed media acrylic painting. I’ve done some drawing. Tried a new knitting pattern.

I want to keep working at silencing this little red flag waver.

She doesn’t have the last word in my life.

She needs to take the very back seat. In fact. She’s not welcome at all. Except in those times when I really am in danger.

How about you? Do you have a little red flag waver inside of you, warning you off of trying new things? An overzealous flag waver who isn’t welcome?

I’d love to hear from you in the comments!

Blessings to you, friend!

  1. Anne, your neighbor at Five minute Friday. I have a few things I would like to try. I loved your post. Blessings Diana

    1. thanks for stopping, Diana! I hope you try those new things and silence the flag waver! Blessings!

  2. love this idea or concept the internal flag waver. We all have one. great writing.

    1. thanks so much, friend, for your kind words! You're right. I think we all have one!

  3. Yes, I have an internal flag waver, too!! Glad you are ignoring her and trying new things!! Art and creativity has a way of adding depth to our life that the flag waver can't! Enjoy!

    1. Thanks, Amy, for stopping by! You are so right. Art and creativity add so much depth to our lives. I don't know where I'd be without it!

  4. Oh, my, gosh!!! I love this image. Yes! I have her, too! But I hadn't seen her quite that way. I kind of had the robot from that 1960's T.V. show, Lost in Space... Danger, young Will! Danger! He was weird and powerful, and had no heart. So, I think I just won't plug him in anymore and let his battery run down! He can rust away in the corner while I move on with my life... doing dangerous things, like opening my heart wide, and flinging myself headlong into writing and revealing the tender spots there. Thank you, Anne, for sharing this image. Next time she gets out her flag, hand her a paint brush or some knitting needles and put her to work!!! I love you, friend.

    1. Love that! Let that old robot's battery run down and he can rust away in the corner! Love that image, too, Luana! Thanks so much for your kind and thoughtful words. They mean so much! love you!
